Developmental Editing is a comprehensive and in-depth process that is aimed at improving the structure, content, and overall coherence of a written work. It involves analyzing and refining the fundamental elements of a manuscript, such as plot, character development (in fiction), pacing, world-building (in fiction), organization, and thematic consistency. Unlike copy editing or proofreading, which focuses on surface-level errors, developmental editing addresses broader aspects of a text, like writing style and voice. It aims to enhance the clarity, effectiveness, and impact of the manuscript. 

As your Developmental Editor, I will comb the manuscript line by line, sentence by sentence, looking for ways to maximize your voice. This process includes pointing out awkward phrasing, unnecessary repetition, telling vs. showing, passive voice, and dialogue, while flagging any inconsistencies with structure, pacing, or timeline. With this style of editing, grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors aren't as important. I will focus on sentence structure, word usage, overall readability, and the flow of your words.

This type of editing is particularly valuable for authors who seek guidance in shaping their ideas and transforming their raw material into a polished and compelling final product.

 

I offer 2 types of Developmental Editing Services:

 

1.) Developmental Editing For A Completed Manuscript- That means your entire first draft is done. You must have a final word count and a book outline or story map. This service is for someone who has the first draft of their book completed and needs developmental editing assistance. 

Length Of Service: 3 months or less

Cost Of Service:

Up to 50,000 words $1,500

50,001-70,000 words $2,100 

70,001 to 90,000 words $2,700

I am currently running a special for completed manuscripts up to 80,000 words. You can receive full Developmental Editing for $800 (or two payments of $400)

 

2.) Full spectrum book development which includes developmental editing and book coaching -This service is for someone who has not completed their book. It will include assistance with creating an outline and regular check-ins equipped with chapter deadlines to ensure your book is completed with ease. Copy editing, proofreading, and book formatting are included in this service. 

Length Of Service: 8 months or less

The cost of this service is $4,000 (or $800 per month)
